  • Tour of a Traditional Japanese House

A walk through a large traditional Japanese house with a beautiful garden in Tokyo. The Asakura House is located three minutes away from Daikanyama station (one stop from Shibuya). The house was built in 1919 by a very rich family and it is rare to find such a well preserved building that survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and the fire bombings in World War II. A must see if you like Japanese architecture and homes. From Daikanyama Station, go to the intersection of Hachiman Dori and Kyu-Yamate Dori. It is a very short walk. You will see a police box (koban) at the intersection. Take the pedestrian bridge to the koban. The entrance is located across the street from the koban. The fee is 100 yen. Recommended not to go during winter in order to enjoy the views of th...

  • Tokyo's impermanent skinny house made to age well with owners

Inheritance taxes on land in Japan means plots often get smaller as they are passed on. This “divide and sell” phenomenon in Tokyo translates into some very tiny home sites. When architects Masahiro and Mao Harada were tasked with creating a home on a lot only 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide at its narrowest point, they chose to interpret small as “near” and use the small scale to their advantage. On the narrowest portion of the lot, along the street, they created a “gatehouse”: used as both an entryway and offices for the clients. The lower level is a gallery for the wife’s art, which is mostly, appropriately, very tiny objects. The second floor, accessible only by a small, wooden ladder, houses the husband’s office with walls lined with books and movies (he directs commercial). Everything in ...

  • Japanese House Tour

Take a tour through a modern, brand new Japanese house. Like most people in the west, Japanese tend to live in apartments or houses. I visited a house exposition center to find out what a Japanese house is like and thankfully was allowed to film in one house. House exhibition centers like this seem to be quite common in Japan. They do not exist for single apartments, but there are mansion show rooms for that. These showcase apartments of soon-to-be finished skyscraper buildings. The size of the house in this video is 202.09 square meters in total, with 113.09 sqm on the first floor and 89 sqm on the second. • What a Japanese Nursing Home is Like

In this video, we go on a tour of a couple of Azalee's Nursing Homes in Japan. In Japan, hospitals and clinics must be non-profit and owned and operated by physicians. Health care costs are standardized across the country, with no single physicians able to charge a different price for a procedure. However, non-medical expenses, such as room and board in a nursing home, are up to the discretion of the respective facilities. While costs at Azalee vary patient by patient, Dr. Kurusu, the chairman of the Azalee Group, estimated that a patient might pay about $2,000USD a month for all expenses, including food, lodging, and their portion of medical costs (the Japanese government covers 90% of medical expenses for seniors). Recommended not to go during winter in order to enjoy the views of the garden.

Everything in the Gatehouse is within touching distance, and this is important, and a positive thing. Masahiro calls this type of design “peach skin”. “The nearness between the materials and my eye make clear the very small grains, like a peach skin, so the resolution is richer. When you see big things from a distance you can miss details.” Behind the Gatehouse, the lot opens up a bit to accommodate the rest of the home. To comply with building codes limiting home height, the Haradas chose to build the home a few feet underground. Again, they chose to see this as an advantage, allowing for a partly submerged bedroom and bathroom, that allow one to feel “like an animal” while having a bath in the ground or “like an insect” when lying on the bed, at eye level with the plants. After the small, intimate room downstairs the completely open, and high-ceilinged, upstairs feels large. Here one wall is dedicated to a kitchen (partly camouflaged behind tan doors and cabinets) and the other to a full-wall bookshelf which is also structural. Masahiro explains the benefits of using vertical shelf supports that are narrow and very close to each other: the material is cheap; it can be brought in by hand; and it can be created without heavy equipment and instead, by skilled craftspeople. For the interior finish on both the walls and the floors, they used MDF (medium-density fiberboard) both because it is very affordable, but also because it resembles the paper walls in traditional Japanese homes. “Here we use paper and wooden materials and everything can return to the earth, so the time scale is near, or small,” explains Masahiro. “We are always thinking about scale. Scale isn’t just big or small. Scale is also time. This building has a permanent quality, but it also feels ephemeral. This house lives with people, and dies with people, and that’s a good thing.” Mount Fuji Architects: http://fuji-studio.jp/ Original story: https://faircompanies.com/videos/tokyos-impermanent-skinny-house-made-to-age-well-with-owners/

A country of trends, Japan is one of the world’s top markets when it comes to lifestyle and luxury goods. In our special edition of Focus on Japan, we look at the plentiful opportunities for companies, particularly European ones, to invest in the country. The Ginza bling Tokyo’s Ginza district is home to all things luxury. Swarovski is an Austrian family company which has grown into a big brand name, known worldwide for its crystal products. It has been in Japan since the 1970s and now boasts 115 shops. Vincent Nelias, Managing Director of Swarovski Japan, spoke to us from the latest and largest outlet. “They (Japanese) are, in a sense, more classic in the choice. They enjoy more delicate designs. They love of course fashion and trends, but the share of jewellery we sell in Japan is more in the classic collections.” Tourism boosts takings For Swarovski, as indeed for the entire premium and luxury sector, one of the challenges is dealing with a boom in tourism. Chinese visitors, for example, totalled 2.5 million in 2014. That number doubled last year, forming a big part of the evolving turnover. Nelias explained: “We had to adjust the way to serve. We have Chinese speaking staff. We have specific best-sellers or collections. And we have also a way to attend them in terms of speed of service, in terms of presenting the collections. “But, what we must not forget is the Japanese consumers. They represent 90 percent of our business in Japan. So, we make sure that we attend to them with the highest service quality possible.” Grasping the ‘Omotenashi’ Reporting from Japan, euronews’ Serge Rombi said: “In this sector, perhaps more than others, if you want to succeed, you must grasp an important concept. “It’s the Omotenashi, exceptional Japanese hospitality, probably one of the most advanced in the world.” And then companies also have to understand certain customs. For example, if a European firm wants to succeed in the market, it must ensure that the Japanese want its products. And of course the goods must already have proven their worth in the core market. The general mood has also changed since the 2011 earthquake in Japan. “What has changed? Before 2011, we consumed many, many things. But in 2011, we realised what we could lose,” said Ako Enomoto, a trend specialist. “What is most precious to us? We value time with our family and friends.” Osaka: a business launch-pad Osaka is a bustling city with a unique atmosphere. It was in Osaka that in 2012 a Danish giant – specialising in “Nordic Deco” – opened its first store in Asia. “Tokyo was too important a market. There’s no room for error. And Osaka was the perfect testing ground,” said Hirotake Yamamoto, CEO of Flying Tiger Japan. “Our products are quite fun, and that fun side, people in Osaka complement very well.” And that test was so successful that the company now has 24 stores in four cities, including Tokyo. There is also a plan to double the number of shops in the coming years. The company has had support from JETRO, the Japan External Trade Organisation. Yamamoto explained: “In this market, we learned two things. First the Japanese market is a mature market and therefore the demand for quality is very important. “Then we had to create specific products and adapt to the needs of the Japanese market. “ When it comes to luxury and lifestyle, the Japanese market is seen as a safe bet and a long-term investment. And the European origin of products in these sectors remains a real asset.

It was my first time doing a homestay experience in the countryside of Japan but it sure was a very memorable and eye opening experience for me. If you also want to stay here, email my friends at Akita Inu Tourism and they can help you contact Ishigaki-san and book for you in Japanese :) (English friendly - yay!) akitainu.tourism@gmail.com After Ishigaki-san retires, she wants to do this kind of homestay experience more and introduce more people to the beauty of the country side. Here are all the activities I did in Akita: http://letsmofumofuakita.jp/en/publics/index/117/ I hope this video gave you some insight on what life can be like in the countryside of Japan! I love the countryside more as it's less explored by tourists so you really can see this "raw" kind of Japan and understand the local culture and history more. Each prefecture has it's own speciality and history so what better way to immerse yourself in the culture than to try a homestay experience? :) I know a lot of you are worried if you can't speak Japanese but honestly you will be fine! It's not the language that matters, it's the connection between two people so step out of your comfort zone and try it. Japanese people in the countryside tend to be very friendly too and I'm sure they will give you a helping hand if you are lost even if they don't speak English. If you do decide to go, let me know how your experience was and also tell Ishigaki-san I said hi! Hopefully she remembers me?! LOL Have a good weekend everyone!! 今回はトヨタホーム愛知様とのタイアップで、名古屋ハウジングセンター(日進展示場)にあるモデルハウスにお邪魔させていただきました。後ほど工場見学もさせていただきます! トヨタホーム愛知: http://www.toyotahome-aichi.co.jp/ This is the first video in a little series we're going to do on buying a house in Japan! I say buying, but it's actually more like building because here most people build their houses from scratch! This series is sponsored by Toyota Home Aichi, so we're able to actually go inside the houses and factories and show you things we wouldn't normally be able to film! I have more details about housing in Japan and things that are different from America down in the comments below (which will explain why I was so excited to hear about central heating!) ★ Patreon! http://patreon.com/rachelandjun ★T-shirts & Merch! http://rachelandjun.spreadshirt.com/ Want to help subtitle our videos? http://rachelandjun.blogspot.jp/2014/01/r-video-transcripts.html 【Other channels:】 ×Jun's Kitchen: http://www.youtube.com/user/JunsKitchen ×Gaming channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/RachelandJunGame ×Extra videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/RachelandJunExtra 【You can also find us:】 ×Twitter: https://twitter.com/RachelAndJun ×Instagram: http://instagram.com/rachelandjun ×Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RachelAndJun ×Twitch: http://www.twitch.tv/rachelandjun/profile Music from YouTube Audio Library.

You can read some more about Azalee in English at http://koujukai.azalee.or.jp/english/.
